A data driven ranking of 35 direct growth large cap schemes, based on fund data last updated 19 July 2026
Large cap mutual funds invest predominantly in the top 100 companies by market capitalisation listed on Indian exchanges. SEBI mandates that these funds hold at least 80% of their assets in large cap stocks, making them one of the more predictable and lower volatility equity categories available to Indian investors.
Because the universe of eligible stocks is tightly defined, the differences between funds come down mostly to stock selection within that constrained universe, expense management, and manager discipline rather than bold allocation calls.
This article analyses 35 direct growth large cap schemes using data as of 19 July 2026, focusing on the funds that have delivered the strongest returns, the best risk adjusted outcomes, and the most competitive costs. All numbers are sourced directly from the fund data set.
How These Funds Were Ranked
The rankings use two separate horizons, 3 year and 5 year annualised returns, shown side by side so investors can judge performance over whichever period matches their own investment timeline. Of the 35 funds in the data set, 30 have a 3 year return and 28 have a 5 year return.
Funds too new to have either metric appear in the full reference table at the end. Expense ratio, AUM, and 3 year Sharpe ratio are included throughout for a fuller picture. The category benchmark, predominantly the Nifty 100 TRI, returned 10.16% over 3 years and 11.18% over 5 years across the data set, giving a fixed reference point for how much of the return shown below is genuine outperformance.
Top 10 Large Cap Funds: 3 Year vs 5 Year Rankings
The two leaderboards below reflect the same category over different time windows. Some funds appear near the top of both lists, which is a stronger signal of consistent quality than a high rank on a single horizon alone.

Rank | Fund | 3Y Return | 5Y Return | Expense Ratio | AUM | Sharpe |
1 | Quant Large Cap Fund Direct Growth | 16.06% | N/A* | 1.37% | ₹3,388.27 Cr | 0.55 |

*N/A indicates the fund's inception date doesn't yet allow for a 5 year track record. 30 of the 35 funds in the data set have a 3 year return.
Ranked by 5 Year Annualised Return
Rank | Fund | 5Y Return | 3Y Return | Expense Ratio | AUM | Sharpe |
1 | Nippon India Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth Plan | 15.96% | 13.49% | 0.58% | ₹53,227.04 Cr | 0.57 |
2 | Invesco India Largecap Fund Direct Plan Growth | 13.79% | 14.73% | 0.67% | ₹1,847.38 Cr | 0.58 |
3 | ICICI Prudential Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth | 13.76% | 13.14% | 0.71% | ₹79,420.74 Cr | 0.55 |
4 | HDFC Large Cap Fund Growth | 13.16% | 11.39% | 1.03% | ₹39,023.69 Cr | 0.39 |
5 | Bandhan Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth | 13.02% | 13.47% | 0.77% | ₹2,060.88 Cr | 0.51 |
6 | Baroda BNP Paribas Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth Option | 12.62% | 12.83% | 0.67% | ₹2,570.57 Cr | 0.50 |
7 | JM Large Cap Fund (Direct) Growth | 12.39% | 12.33% | 0.82% | ₹409.12 Cr | 0.45 |
8 | Edelweiss Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth option | 12.24% | 11.44% | 0.67% | ₹1,434.27 Cr | 0.41 |
9 | Tata Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth | 12.15% | 12.27% | 0.83% | ₹2,721.33 Cr | 0.43 |
10 | Bank of India Large Cap Fund Direct Growth | 12.04% | 14.44% | 0.82% | ₹220.36 Cr | 0.55 |
Only 28 of the 35 funds in the data set have a 5 year track record; the rest were launched too recently.
Six funds appear in the top 10 of both lists: Invesco India Largecap, Bank of India Large Cap, Nippon India Large Cap, Bandhan Large Cap, ICICI Prudential Large Cap, and Baroda BNP Paribas Large Cap. That consistency across horizons is a stronger signal than a high score on either list alone.
Quant Large Cap and WhiteOak Capital Large Cap rank highly on the 3 year list purely because neither has a 5 year track record yet to weigh in. All returns are direct plan, growth option figures, measured predominantly against the Nifty 100 TRI (the 3 year category benchmark return is 10.16% and the 5 year benchmark return is 11.18%, so every fund shown above has outperformed its benchmark on the relevant horizon).
A Closer Look at the Top Performers
1. Quant Large Cap Fund: Leads the 3 Year Table
Quant Large Cap Fund tops the 3 year list at 16.06%, managed by Sandeep Tandon, but it is also the most concentrated and most expensive fund among the leaders, with an expense ratio of 1.37% and top 10 holdings making up 73.70% of the portfolio, by far the highest concentration in the category. Adani Green Energy (9.62%), Adani Enterprises (9.24%), and Adani Energy Solutions (4.37%) together account for close to a quarter of the fund on their own.
The fund's 3 year Beta of 1.14 and tracking error of 7.61, both well above the category norm, reflect a benchmark deviating style that has paid off over this specific window but carries meaningfully more concentration risk than a typical large cap fund. It does not yet have a 5 year track record to weigh against this run.
2. Invesco India Largecap Fund: Best Combination of Consistency and Cost
Invesco India Largecap Fund, managed by Hiten Jain, is the only fund to place in the top 3 of both the 3 year (14.73%) and 5 year (13.79%) rankings, and it does so with the best Sharpe ratio (0.58) among the leading return generators and a reasonable 0.67% expense ratio. Its top 10 holdings sit at a moderate 42.34% of the portfolio, led by ICICI Bank (7.22%) and HDFC Bank (5.98%), a more diversified stance than Quant's approach at the top of the 3 year table.
3. Nippon India Large Cap Fund: Best 5 Year Return, and Massive Scale
Nippon India Large Cap Fund, managed by Sailesh Raj Bhan, leads the 5 year table at 15.96% while still holding a top 5 position on the 3 year list at 13.49%, all while managing ₹53,227.04 Cr in assets, among the largest funds in this category. Its top 10 holdings sit at 45.74%, led by HDFC Bank (9.91%) and ICICI Bank (8.53%), and its Beta of 0.96 and tracking error of 2.83 suggest a fund that has delivered its outperformance without straying far from benchmark like behaviour, a notable combination at this scale.
4. WhiteOak Capital Large Cap Fund: Best Risk Adjusted Return
WhiteOak Capital Large Cap Fund, managed by Ramesh Mantri, posts the best 3 year Sharpe ratio in the category at 0.61, alongside a strong 14.63% 3 year return, achieved with a Beta of just 0.92 and the second lowest tracking error (2.61) among funds with a full risk profile. It does not yet have a 5 year track record, but its risk adjusted showing over 3 years stands out even against funds with higher headline returns.
5. Bank of India Large Cap Fund: High Return at a Small Scale
Bank of India Large Cap Fund, managed by Alok Singh, appears in the top 10 on both horizons (14.44% over 3 years, 12.04% over 5 years) while remaining the smallest fund among the category's leaders at just ₹220.36 Cr in assets. That compact size can make it easier for a manager to act on high conviction ideas without the constraints that affect mega funds, though it also means the fund has a shorter runway of investor scrutiny than its larger peers.
Best Risk Adjusted Returns: Highest Sharpe Ratio
The Sharpe ratio measures how much return a fund generated per unit of risk taken, where a higher number means the fund's gains came with comparatively less volatility.
Fund | 3Y Sharpe Ratio | 3Y Return |
WhiteOak Capital Large Cap Fund | 0.61 | 14.63% |
Invesco India Largecap Fund | 0.58 | 14.73% |
Nippon India Large Cap Fund | 0.57 | 13.49% |
Quant Large Cap Fund | 0.55 | 16.06% |
Bank of India Large Cap Fund / DSP Large Cap Fund / ICICI Prudential Large Cap Fund | 0.55 | 13 to 16% |
WhiteOak Capital Large Cap Fund leads on risk adjusted terms despite ranking third on raw 3 year return, a useful reminder that the highest headline number and the smoothest ride are not always delivered by the same fund.
Lowest Cost Large Cap Funds
Expense ratio compounds over time, so it's worth weighing alongside returns:
Fund | Expense Ratio | 3Y Return |
Parag Parikh Large Cap Fund Direct Growth | 0.14% | N/A* |
Canara Robeco Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth | 0.46% | 11.45% |
Mirae Asset Large Cap Fund Regular Growth | 0.50% | 10.27% |
JioBlackRock Large Cap Fund Direct Growth | 0.50% | N/A* |
Bajaj Finserv Large Cap Fund Direct Growth | 0.52% | N/A* |
*N/A funds were launched too recently for a 3 year return. Parag Parikh Large Cap Fund's 0.14% expense ratio is the lowest in the category by a wide margin, though its very recent April 2026 inception means there is no return history yet to weigh against that cost advantage.
The Largest Large Cap Funds by AUM
Size doesn't guarantee better returns, but the largest funds tend to attract assets for a reason, including long track records, brand trust, or consistent past performance:
Fund | AUM | 3Y Return | 5Y Return |
ICICI Prudential Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth | ₹79,420.74 Cr | 13.14% | 13.76% |
SBI Large Cap Fund Direct Growth | ₹55,063.96 Cr | 10.53% | 11.63% |
Nippon India Large Cap Fund Direct Plan Growth Plan | ₹53,227.04 Cr | 13.49% | 15.96% |
HDFC Large Cap Fund Growth | ₹39,023.69 Cr | 11.39% | 13.16% |
Mirae Asset Large Cap Fund Regular Growth | ₹38,379.27 Cr | 10.27% | 10.37% |
ICICI Prudential and Nippon India stand out here for combining massive scale with returns that still rank among the category's better performers, a combination that is not a given at this size, since very large funds can sometimes struggle to deploy capital as nimbly as smaller ones.
What These Funds Actually Hold
Across the data set, large cap portfolios are overwhelmingly equity, averaging 97.4% in stocks with the remainder mostly in cash rather than bonds. Private banks dominate the top holdings list: ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank appear among the top five holdings in the large majority of funds reviewed, followed by Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, and Larsen & Toubro as recurring names.
Concentration varies widely even within this constrained category, from JM Large Cap Fund's top 10 holdings at just 37.69% of the portfolio to Quant Large Cap Fund's 73.70%, with the more concentrated funds, Quant in particular, leaning on Adani group names that are far less common elsewhere in the category.
Things to Consider Before Investing
· Large cap does not mean uniform risk. Beta across the category ranges from 0.88 to 1.14 and tracking error from 1.35 to 7.61, meaning some funds behave much closer to their benchmark than others despite sharing the same broad mandate.
· Track record length varies. Five funds in the data set, including Quant Large Cap and WhiteOak Capital Large Cap, do not yet have a 5 year history, since they were launched or restructured in 2024 or later.
· Expense ratio compounds. The gap between the cheapest fund in this category (0.14%) and the priciest leader (Quant Large Cap at 1.37%) is large enough to meaningfully affect long term net returns.
· Concentration is a double edged sword. Quant Large Cap's heavy Adani group weighting has driven its 3 year lead, but also its higher Beta and tracking error, meaning bigger swings relative to the benchmark in both directions.
· Risk adjusted return isn't the same as raw return. WhiteOak Capital Large Cap posts the best Sharpe ratio in the set without topping the raw return charts, useful for investors who would rather smooth the ride than chase the highest headline number.
