Anthropic Claude Pricing in India (2026): Complete Guide in ₹ Rupees

Claude by Anthropic is one of the most capable AI assistants available today, providing advanced capabilities across coding, writing, analysis, and research. For Indian users and developers, however, understanding Claude’s pricing structure requires navigating USD-denominated plans, GST implications, and forex conversion rates that most pricing articles do not address.

Anthropic currently has no India-specific pricing in INR. All plans are billed in US dollars, and Indian users pay in USD at their bank’s prevailing conversion rate, plus applicable taxes.

What Each Plan Includes

Free gives you access to Claude’s web, iOS, Android, and desktop apps with basic usage limits. It’s suitable for occasional users who want to explore Claude’s capabilities.

Pro (approximately Rs 2,240 per month) is the entry point for serious users. It provides at least 5x more usage than the Free tier and priority access to new features and models.

Max plans are for power users who regularly hit Pro limits. The 5x variant at approximately Rs 11,200 per month and the 20x variant at approximately Rs 44,800 per month offer substantially higher usage volumes for intensive professional workflows.

Team adds centralised billing, admin controls, and collaboration features, ideal for small businesses and startups. Minimum two seats required.

When an Indian user pays for Claude using a credit or debit card, the government levies 18% GST on digital services imported from foreign companies. This adds approximately Rs 400 to the Pro plan cost, making the true monthly outlay closer to Rs 2,640.

2. Anthropic API Pricing in India

Developers and businesses can access Claude directly through the Anthropic API. API pricing is per-token, with no monthly subscription. You pay only for what you use, making it economical for applications with variable usage.

Note: Opus 4.7 uses a new tokenizer that may consume up to 35% more tokens for the same text, so factor this into your cost calculations.

Batch API is 50% Cheaper for Non-Urgent Work

If your application can tolerate up to 24 hours of processing time, the Batch API offers a 50% discount on all models. This is highly recommended for bulk content generation, document analysis, or any use case where immediate response is not required.

3. Prompt Caching: Reduce Costs by Up to 90%

One of Anthropic’s most powerful cost-saving features is prompt caching. When you repeatedly send the same large system prompt or document context, prompt caching stores that content server-side so you pay a fraction of the full input price on subsequent requests.

A 5-minute cache write costs 1.25x the base input price. A 1-hour cache write costs 2x the base input price. Cache reads cost 10% of the base input price. This can reduce costs by 80% to 90% for applications that reuse the same large context.

For applications with large, repeated system prompts like a financial analysis assistant with extensive instructions, a legal document review tool with a large ruleset, or a customer service bot with extensive product knowledge, prompt caching is not optional. It is essential for keeping API costs manageable.

Here are realistic monthly cost estimates for common use cases, using Sonnet 4.6 as the primary model:

5. India-Specific Challenges & Workarounds

Indian users face several friction points that their counterparts in the US or UK do not.

No UPI or INR Payment Support

Claude subscriptions must be paid with international credit or debit cards. UPI, NetBanking, and domestic debit cards are not accepted. Users without international cards can use platforms like AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI, which accept Indian payment methods for API access.

GST and the Hidden Tax

Under India’s GST rules, digital services imported from foreign companies attract 18% IGST. This applies to claude.ai subscriptions. For API usage billed through Anthropic directly, the same 18% GST applies and must be self-assessed and paid by the Indian business.

Rupee Depreciation Risk

The USD/INR rate has risen from approximately Rs 84 in late 2024 to approximately Rs 95 by May 2026, a depreciation of about 13%. USD-denominated subscriptions have therefore become more expensive in rupee terms even without any price change from Anthropic. Hedging is not practical for individual users; factor in an annual 5% to 8% depreciation buffer when budgeting.

No India-Specific Pricing (Yet)

• AWS Bedrock: Available in the ap-south-1 (Mumbai) region. Bills in INR through the AWS India entity. Pricing tracks Anthropic's rates. Regional endpoints add a 10% premium over global endpoints.

• Google Vertex AI: Available through Google Cloud India. Bills in INR for Indian customers with a local GCP account. Offers multi-region routing within Asia-Pacific.

Recommended for Indian Businesses: If your company already uses AWS or GCP, accessing Claude through Bedrock or Vertex may be cheaper overall once you factor in AWS/GCP credits, unified billing, and the absence of direct GST complexity.

7. How to Optimise Claude Costs in India

• Use prompt caching aggressively. If your app sends a large system prompt on every call, caching alone can reduce your monthly API bill by 60%-80%.

• Choose the right model for each task. Route simple classification tasks to Haiku 4.5 (≈ ₹95/MTok input). Reserve Opus 4.7 (≈ ₹475/MTok input) for genuinely complex reasoning. Sonnet 4.6 is the sweet spot for most tasks.

• Use the Batch API for non-real-time workloads. Document processing, nightly analytics, content pipelines, all are ideal batch candidates. 50% savings with no quality trade-off.

• Bill annually when on a subscription plan. The annual Pro plan saves ~15% (≈ ₹4,000/year) over monthly billing.

• Route your API through AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI if you need INR billing and GST input tax credit the pricing is nearly identical and compliance is simpler.
